Job Overview:
A respected Washington, D.C.-based law firm is seeking a seasoned Patent Agent with a background in the life sciences sector to support its expanding Intellectual Property practice. This opportunity is offered through a legal recruitment agency on behalf of the firm. The successful candidate will contribute to a broad range of intellectual property (IP) matters, collaborating closely with the patent team across multiple disciplines and working with innovative clients in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and related fields.

Duties:

  • Analyze innovations to assess potential patentability across various scientific and technical domains

  • Prepare, draft, and file U.S. patent applications with a focus on life sciences technologies

  • Manage U.S. patent prosecution and coordinate international filings with foreign associates

  • Provide support for IP due diligence efforts and strategic portfolio development

  • Conduct legal, scientific, and technical research relevant to patent matters

  • Partner with attorneys, inventors, and business units to shape and align IP strategy

  • Act as a liaison for cross-functional projects and coordinate with external legal partners

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 4 years of hands-on patent prosecution experience in a law firm or corporate setting

  • Demonstrated expertise in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or medical device technologies

  • U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) registration or eligibility to sit for the exam shortly

  • Exposure to mechanical or electrical technologies is beneficial

  • Strong analytical and scientific background to support complex IP matters

  • Effective communicator with a collaborative mindset and attention to detail

Education:

  • Ph.D. in a life sciences-related field (e.g., molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology)

Certifications:

  • USPTO Registration (or near-term eligibility to take the exam)

  • Active membership in good standing with a State Bar (if applicable)

Skills:

  • Exceptional writing, drafting, and analytical skills

  • Proven ability to manage patent portfolios and contribute to strategic planning

  • Comfortable working both independently and within a collaborative team structure

  • Familiarity with interdisciplinary patent work, including due diligence and IP research
