Job Title: Patent Agent/Advisor (Medtech)

Job Overview:
A New York City-based law firm with a robust intellectual property practice is seeking a Patent Agent with a strong foundation in mechanical, biomedical, or chemical engineering to join its medtech-focused IP team. This position offers the opportunity to work on a broad range of patent matters, from application drafting to strategic analysis, in a fast-paced and collaborative environment. Ideal candidates will bring a mix of technical expertise, analytical capability, and excellent communication skills.

Duties:

  • Conduct comprehensive prior art searches to assess patentability and freedom-to-operate positions

  • Draft patent applications and prepare responses to USPTO office actions

  • Analyze technical literature, scientific documentation, and existing patents

  • Assist attorneys with prosecution, litigation support, and patent strategy

  • Collaborate with legal and technical professionals on cross-disciplinary matters

  • Stay current on evolving technologies within the mechanical and biomedical sectors

Requirements:

  • At least 1 year of experience in a law firm patent practice

  • Background in the medical device, chemical, or mechanical engineering industries

  • Eligible to sit for the USPTO registration exam or already registered as a U.S. Patent Agent

  • Exceptional analytical and writing skills

  • Proven ability to manage multiple assignments with attention to detail

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related discipline

  • An advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) is considered a plus

Certifications:

  • USPTO Registration (or eligibility to register)

Skills:

  • Strong written and oral communication abilities

  • Technically adept with the ability to distill complex scientific concepts

  • Self-directed, team-oriented, and quick to learn new subject matter

  • Highly organized with excellent time management
