Job Overview:
A distinguished law firm located in West Hartford, CT, is expanding its Intellectual Property practice and is seeking a highly qualified Patent Attorney with a strong background in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or medical devices. This role involves direct engagement with complex patent prosecution matters and strategic portfolio management in the life sciences sector. The attorney will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of patent professionals and support a wide range of clients in developing and protecting their intellectual property assets globally.

Duties:

  • Assess innovations across multiple scientific domains for patentability

  • Draft, file, and prosecute U.S. patent applications

  • Coordinate international patent prosecution activities

  • Provide legal and scientific support for IP due diligence and freedom-to-operate assessments

  • Advise on the strategic development and management of patent portfolios

  • Conduct in-depth research and analysis of IP issues, technologies, and legal precedents

  • Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders on patent strategy and implementation

  • Participate in cross-functional initiatives and liaise with external patent agents and legal professionals

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in patent prosecution, either in a law firm or corporate environment

  • Demonstrated expertise in life sciences, with emphasis on biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or related technologies

  • Admission to at least one U.S. State Bar in good standing

  • USPTO registration (or pending eligibility)

  • Familiarity with medical device, mechanical, or electrical technologies is considered advantageous

  • Proven ability to communicate complex scientific and legal concepts clearly

  • Team-oriented with a strong client-service mindset

Education:

  • Ph.D. in a life sciences discipline (e.g., molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology)

Certifications:

  • Admission to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and technical writing capabilities

  • Strategic thinking applied to IP planning and innovation management

  • Collaborative approach to team-based legal service delivery
