Job Overview
A nationally recognized energy law firm is seeking an Oil & Gas Title Attorney with significant experience in New Mexico and/or West Texas to support its expanding Permian Basin practice. This is a full-time, remote or hybrid role offering the opportunity to work on high-level title and transactional matters for a diverse client base. The position is best suited for attorneys who are detail-oriented, growth-minded, and committed to delivering precise, high-quality legal solutions within a collaborative team.

Duties

  • Conduct title examinations and analyze relevant records including deeds, leases, and contracts

  • Draft title opinions, identifying ownership rights and potential defects, liens, or encumbrances

  • Perform due diligence for asset acquisitions, mergers, and other oil and gas transactions

  • Advise on legal risks and regulatory considerations in transactional matters

  • Draft, review, and negotiate oil and gas contracts including leases, joint operating agreements, and purchase/sale agreements

  • Stay current on federal, state, and local laws affecting oil and gas operations

  • Collaborate with litigation counsel in the event of disputes

  • Work as part of a team to execute complex legal projects with accuracy and timeliness

  • Meet a quarterly billing requirement of 450 hours

  • Engage in professional development and continuing legal education

  • Contribute to firm initiatives and special projects as needed

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of experience drafting title opinions for oil and gas lands in New Mexico and/or Texas

  • Proficiency in preparing unit-wide division order ownerships with tract and allocation factors

  • Demonstrated ability to handle high-volume, complex title matters independently

  • Strong ethical judgment and commitment to confidentiality

Education

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school

Certifications

  • Active license to practice law in the U.S.

  • Admission in Texas or New Mexico strongly preferred

Skills
