Job Overview:

A law firm is seeking a Junior To Mid-Level Product Design And User Interface Patent Associate Attorney to join its Washington, DC office. The ideal candidate will be responsible for handling a diverse portfolio of clients with a focus on patent preparation, prosecution, and strategic client advising. The role will involve working on innovative technologies, with a special emphasis on software, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IOT), networking, and quantum technologies. The candidate must demonstrate a strong ability to communicate complex technical concepts in a clear, concise manner and possess a deep understanding of patent law.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and prosecute patent applications for clients across various industries, focusing on cutting-edge technologies such as software, AI, IOT, networking, and quantum technologies.
  • Conduct patentability assessments and assist clients in developing robust intellectual property (IP) strategies.
  • Provide legal advice on patent portfolio management and technology development for domestic and international clients.
  • Collaborate with clients' engineering teams to fully understand product designs and technical innovations.
  • Conduct interviews with patent examiners and effectively navigate the USPTO to secure successful outcomes.
  • Draft responses to office actions and advise clients on matters related to patent examination.
  • Conduct IP due diligence for mergers, acquisitions, and technology-related transactions.
  • Stay current on legal developments related to patent law, particularly in the technology and design sectors.
  • Mentor and collaborate with junior attorneys, patent agents, and technical advisors within the firm.

Education and Certifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is required.
  • Admission to the Washington, DC Bar, or eligibility to waive into the Bar.

Experience and Requirements:

  • A minimum of 2+ years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution.
  • Proven track record working in a law firm or in-house with an emphasis on IP law.
  • Technical degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science.
  • Experience in software-related technologies, artificial intelligence, networking, IOT, or quantum technologies preferred.
  • Solid understanding of patent law and USPTO procedures.
  • Demonstrated a high level of academic achievement and strong work ethic.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly articulate complex legal and technical concepts.
  • Superb legal writing skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to think critically and strategically.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in building and managing client relationships.
  • Experience with patent drafting software and case management tools is an asset.
