Patent Agent

A law firm is seeking a Patent Agent for their Chicago office. This role involves working closely with inventors on newly created products, assisting in identifying patentable inventions, and drafting patent applications. The ideal candidate should have a background in electrical engineering or biotechnology, along with prior experience in patent law.

Job Overview:

• Work closely with inventors on newly developed products.
• Assist in identifying patentable inventions and conducting research on current patented technologies.
• Draft patent applications with the support of the patent team and track the patent application process.
• Conduct ability searches regularly and respond to client needs and challenges.
• Correspond with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, responding to office actions.
• Meet billable hour requirements consistently.

Duties:

• Work hand-in-hand with inventors on newly created products.
• Assist in the identification of patentable inventions.
• Research current patented technologies to best assist clients in patentable work.
• Draft patent applications with the assistance of the patent team.
• Track the patent application process from initial application to granted patent to ensure the team remains on track.
• Complete ability searches regularly.
• Solve client challenges and respond to client needs.
• Respond to office actions and correspond with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
• Consistently meet billable hour requirements.

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering.
• Master’s Degree or PhD desired.
• 3+ years of professional experience.
• USPTO Registration required.
• Backgrounds in electrical engineering or biotechnology.
• Prior experience working in the area of patent law.
