Job Title: Senior Energy Regulatory Associate Attorney

Job Overview
A prominent law firm located in Washington, DC, is seeking a highly skilled Senior Energy Regulatory Associate to join its dynamic team. This role involves advising clients on federal energy regulations, representing them before various regulatory bodies, and drafting legal documents ensuring compliance with energy laws. The ideal candidate will have expertise in areas such as renewable energy, natural gas, nuclear power, and electricity market design, along with experience in regulatory litigation, commercial agreements, and project development.

Duties

  • Advise clients on compliance with federal energy regulations and represent them in administrative proceedings before agencies such as the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC).

  • Navigate issues related to power generation, transmission, and retail electricity markets.

  • Draft and negotiate commercial agreements including power purchase agreements (PPAs), interconnection agreements (IAs), and transportation agreements.

  • Counsel clients before federal agencies, including FERC and NERC, as well as state agencies, and assist in negotiating agreements related to energy infrastructure.

  • Defend clients in audit and enforcement actions for natural gas and liquid pipeline clients, electric generators, and energy market participants.

  • Advise clients on complex regulatory matters involving nuclear power, including compliance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations.

  • Manage multiple workstreams and deliver quality results within tight deadlines.

  • Cultivate strong client relationships and effectively communicate with internal teams, clients, and external stakeholders.

  • Participate in educational seminars and practice groups for continuous professional development.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in energy regulatory law, with a focus on transactional matters.

  • Strong knowledge of federal and state energy regulations, including FERC, NERC, and NRC guidelines.

  • Proven ability to draft, negotiate, and enforce commercial agreements in the energy sector.

  • Experience in regulatory litigation, including prosecuting administrative cases and defending clients in audit and enforcement actions.

  • Ability to handle complex issues related to power generation, transmission, natural gas, renewable energy, and nuclear energy.

  • Strong research and analytical skills with the ability to understand and interpret energy regulatory practices.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work effectively under pressure.

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and drafting skills.

  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.

Education

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school (or foreign equivalent).

  • Admission to the Washington, DC bar or ability to become admitted.

Certifications

  • Admitted to the Washington, D.C. or Texas Bar (or the ability to become admitted) and in good standing.
