A law firm in Reston is seeking a Patent Agent specializing in Molecular Biology to join its Intellectual Property and Technology Practice Group, specifically the Patent Development and Strategy Subgroup. The ideal candidate should possess transferable skills, strong academic credentials from nationally recognized schools, and prior experience in a large or mid-sized law firm. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in life sciences, particularly biotechnology, and registration with the USPTO. An advanced degree, preferably a PhD, in molecular and cellular biology or related disciplines is preferred. Experience in litigation, opinions, licensing, patent due diligence, and/or trademarks is also desirable.

 

Duties:

  • Conducting patentability searches and analyzing prior art
  • Drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the field of molecular biology
  • Providing technical and legal support for patent litigation matters
  • Conducting patent due diligence and assisting with patent portfolio management
  • Advising clients on patent strategy and intellectual property matters
  • Collaborating with attorneys and clients to develop patent strategies and solutions
  • Providing opinions on patentability, validity, and infringement

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in molecular biology or related field
  • Registration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
  • 2-5 years of experience in patent prosecution and/or related areas
  • Strong academic background from nationally recognized schools
  • Experience in a large or mid-sized law firm is preferred
  • Advanced degree, preferably a PhD, in molecular and cellular biology or similar disciplines (excluding chemistry, medical device, or pharmaceutical sciences)
  • Background in life sciences, particularly biotechnology, is preferred
  • Experience in litigation, opinions, licensing, patent due diligence, and/or trademarks is preferred

 

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in molecular biology or related field
  • Registration with the USPTO

 

Certifications:

Registration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
