Job Overview:
A respected law firm located in Washington, DC, is seeking an attorney with 3–5 years of specialized experience in federal energy regulation. This opportunity is ideal for professionals seeking a flexible remote arrangement, with a core base workload and additional compensation for extra hours. The role centers around regulatory matters involving electricity markets and federal energy compliance, providing the chance to contribute meaningfully to a sophisticated practice without the demands of a full-time schedule.

Duties:

  • Advise clients on compliance issues under the Federal Power Act and related energy statutes

  • Draft, review, and file regulatory submissions with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)

  • Analyze legal implications of market-based rate applications, grid interconnection procedures, and qualifying facility certifications

  • Navigate legal challenges involving transmission formula rates and litigation under FERC Order No. 1000

  • Provide strategic insight into regulatory changes impacting wholesale electric markets

  • Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda on complex regulatory matters

  • Collaborate with firm partners and clients on evolving issues under the Public Utility Holding Company Act and Section 203 filings

  • Address regulatory issues involving exempt wholesale generators and interlocking directorates

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years post-JD experience focusing on energy regulatory law

  • Prior exposure to FERC either through private practice or direct agency experience

  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects independently in a remote setting

  • Strong grasp of statutory frameworks governing electric utilities and transmission

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school

Certifications:

  • Active membership in at least one U.S. state bar

  • Eligibility for District of Columbia Bar admission (firm covers DC Bar waiver fees if necessary)

Skills:

  • Proficient in legal research tools and regulatory databases

  • Excellent written communication and persuasive writing capabilities

  • Ability to synthesize complex regulations into practical legal guidance
