A law firm in Chicago, IL is seeking a Mid-Level Software/Computer Science Patent Associate Attorney to prosecute patent applications in the United States and direct foreign patent prosecution. The attorney will provide expert guidance on electrical, computer sciences, and software matters, manage patent prosecution practice, and collaborate with clients, USPTO, and colleagues. Duties:

  • Prosecute patent applications in the United States and oversee foreign patent prosecution.
  • Act as an expert advisor to clients on electrical, computer sciences, and software-related matters.
  • Manage all aspects of patent prosecution practice, including docket management, USPTO communication, and client interaction.
  • Evaluate invention disclosure materials and prepare/prosecute patent applications for software inventions, including machine learning.
  • Provide technical expertise in computer science, software, and related fields.
  • Conduct IP due diligence reviews and assess patentability, freedom to operate, and ongoing patent-related issues.
  • Liaise with clients to ensure timely filing of domestic and foreign patent applications.
  • Conduct and participate in client meetings regarding patent research and application processes.
  • Receive training with increasing levels of responsibility and collaborate across practice groups and offices.

Requirements:

  • 3-5 years of experience in software/computer science patent law.
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with Application Packaging Standard, APIs in software development, machine learning, and SaaS platforms.
  • Registered and in good standing with the USPTO.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Team-oriented mentality, self-motivated, and comfortable in fast-paced environments.
  • Keen interest in relationship-building skills both internally and externally.
  • Prior experiences working with diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Strong law school credentials and references.

Education and Certifications:

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field.
  • Registration in good standing with the USPTO.
