Job Overview

An established law firm in the Pacific Northwest is seeking a full-time Patent Attorney with a focus on biotechnology and/or pharmaceuticals to join its Intellectual Property practice. This role supports clients across the healthcare and life sciences sectors, advising on patent prosecution, portfolio strategy, and IP protection. The firm offers a collaborative culture and flexible hybrid work arrangements. Candidates must have a strong scientific background, experience in biotech patent prosecution, and excellent communication skills.

Duties

  • Draft and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications related to biotechnology and pharmaceuticals

  • Conduct patentability, freedom-to-operate, and validity assessments

  • Advise clients on patent portfolio strategy and IP protection

  • Prepare legal opinions regarding infringement, validity, and enforceability

  • Collaborate with inventors, in-house counsel, and legal teams across offices

  • Manage IP projects independently and within a team environment

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in biotech/pharma patent prosecution

  • Strong project ownership and ability to work both independently and collaboratively

  • Excellent communication, writing, and interpersonal skills

  • Client service-oriented with a strong professional work ethic

  • Willingness to work in-office Tuesday through Thursday, with remote flexibility on Mondays and Fridays

Education

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in a relevant life sciences field, such as:

    • Biology

    • Biochemistry

    • Immunology

    • Molecular and Cellular Biology

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school

Certifications

  • USPTO registration (required for all candidates)

  • Active membership with the Oregon State Bar, or eligibility for reciprocity

  • Ability to distill complex technical content into effective legal strategy

  • High attention to detail and strong organizational abilities
