Job Title: Land Use And Municipal Attorney

Job Overview:
A Somerville, NJ-based law firm is seeking a driven associate attorney with 2-6 years of focused experience in land use and municipal law. The position offers a unique opportunity to represent both private applicants and public entities in development projects, land use hearings, municipal advisory matters, and related litigation. The ideal candidate will play an integral role in shaping community landscapes while navigating regulatory frameworks and municipal codes.

Duties:

  • Represent clients at Planning Board and Zoning Board of Adjustment hearings

  • Serve as legal advisor to municipalities and public entities

  • Draft and review resolutions and documents for land use boards

  • Manage development applications and assist clients through permitting processes

  • Act as board attorney for municipal public hearings

  • Handle litigation, including prerogative writ actions and general municipal disputes

  • Prepare legal filings such as pleadings, motions, and briefs

  • Address matters relating to redevelopment designations and redevelopment plans

  • Engage in additional practice areas, including:

    • Transactional real estate

    • Estate and landlord-tenant litigation

    • Enforcement of commercial lease agreements

    • Affordable housing regulations

    • Open Public Records Act (OPRA) compliance

Requirements:

  • 2-6 years of experience in land use, zoning, and municipal law

  • Courtroom and board hearing experience strongly preferred

  • Familiarity with New Jersey redevelopment law and municipal processes

  • Ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously with attention to detail

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school

Certifications:

  • Active New Jersey Bar license in good standing

Skills:

  • Strong legal research and analytical writing capabilities

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

  • Comfortable engaging with public officials and community stakeholders

  • Capable of drafting comprehensive legal documents with minimal oversight
