Job Overview:
A law firm is seeking a Patent Agent to join its Intellectual Property team. This role involves performing highly complex and sensitive work related to patent applications and responses to communications from the USPTO. The Patent Agent will work closely with attorneys to deliver quality legal services in a cost-effective manner. The position is open to candidates with a degree in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering, and is preferably licensed to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. 

Location:

  • Austin, TX

Duties:

  • Prepare draft patent applications, incorporating scientific aspects of inventions.
  • Draft responses to communications from U.S. and foreign patent offices regarding scientific and factual matters.
  • Communicate with clients and inventors about the scientific aspects of inventions, providing attorneys with detailed reports.
  • Act as a liaison between inventors and the Patent & Trademark Office, assisting throughout the patent application process.
  • Advise attorneys on technology-related matters and conduct technological investigations as necessary.
  • Draft, organize, analyze, and summarize technical documents and other materials.
  • Review and analyze client files and perform regulatory and factual research.
  • Coordinate workflow with outside service providers and manage document preparation.
  • Identify and resolve complex patent issues and implement solutions.
  • Provide direction and guidance to legal support staff when necessary.
  • Stay updated on technology trends and patent prosecution issues through continuing education.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering.
  • Licensed to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (preferred).
  • Strong investigative and problem-resolution skills.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret research findings and prepare reports.
  • Expertise in drafting complex patent documentation within the technology field.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate complex technical information effectively.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in patent prosecution.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information.
  • Flexibility to work overtime or on weekends when necessary to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to travel as needed, including both local and out-of-town travel.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering (preferred).

Certifications:

  • Licensed to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (preferred).

  • Proficient in using various software packages and office equipment.
