A law firm seeks a mid-level attorney to join its Chicago office, providing counsel on state and federal tax disputes, estate planning, and corporate transactions. The position offers direct engagement with clients and collaboration with senior tax and business law advisors.

Duties

  • Lead and support tax controversy matters before state and federal authorities

  • Draft and negotiate transactional documents relating to business formations, asset sales, and equity transfers

  • Advise clients on estate planning strategies and assist with trust and probate administration

  • Conduct thorough legal research on complex tax, business, and transactional issues

  • Represent clients in negotiations with regulatory bodies and during transactional closings

  • Collaborate with senior attorneys on case strategy and deal structuring

  • Maintain organized client files and manage document production during audits and disputes

Requirements

  • 3–6 years of experience in tax controversy (state and/or federal), estate planning, or corporate transactional work

  • Proven ability to manage client relationships and guide matters from inception through resolution

  • Experience drafting complex legal memoranda, transactional agreements, and estate planning documents

  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail for interpreting tax regulations and business agreements

  • Comfortable working in a hybrid environment with occasional on-site client meetings

Education

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school

Certifications

  • Active license to practice law in Illinois

  • Any tax-related certification (e.g., LL.M. in Taxation) is a plus, but not required

Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication tailored to client and regulatory audiences

  • Proficiency in conducting legal research and synthesizing statutes, regulations, and case law

  • Ability to negotiate effectively on tax disputes and transactional matters
