Patent Agent

A law firm seeks a mid-level to senior patent agent with expertise in Biology or Biotechnology to join their intellectual property (IP) team. The role will primarily focus on patent counseling, procurement, and opinion work, with additional opportunities in licensing and enforcement. This position offers the flexibility of remote work with the option for hybrid or in-office presence in Philadelphia.

Duties

• Counsel clients on intellectual property strategy and provide guidance on best practices for patent portfolio management.
• Lead patent procurement efforts, including the preparation and prosecution of complex patent applications.
• Manage global patent portfolios and collaborate with international patent counsel to prosecute patent applications in foreign jurisdictions.
• Provide IP-related due diligence, including conducting patentability, freedom to operate, and infringement analyses.
• Consult with inventors, technical experts, and internal patent portfolio managers to ensure effective protection of innovations.
• Stay current with relevant patent law, biology, and biotechnology developments to advise clients on industry trends and legal implications.

Requirements

• Minimum of 4 years of patent prosecution experience in IP law, with a focus on Biology or Biotechnology.
• Proven ability to handle complex patent applications and global patent portfolio management.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and effectively manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment.
• Highly motivated and results-driven individual with excellent communication and client-facing skills.
• Registered to practice before the USPTO.

Education

• Ph.D. or Master’s degree in a biology-related field such as Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Microbiology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or Biotechnology.

Certifications

• Active USPTO Registration required.

Skills

• Expertise in patent prosecution, including preparation and filing of patent applications.
• In-depth knowledge of Biology or Biotechnology and how it intersects with patent law.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for client interactions and collaboration with technical teams.
• Experience with managing global patent portfolios and coordinating with foreign counsel.
• Ability to handle due diligence, including patentability and freedom to operate opinions.
