Estate and Business Succession Planning Attorney

Job Overview

A law firm seeks a highly skilled Estate and Business Succession Planning Attorney in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. This position is ideal for an attorney with expertise in complex estate planning, closely held business structures, and succession planning for high-net-worth individuals and business owners. The role involves collaborating with family-owned businesses, executives, and entrepreneurs to create sophisticated, tax-efficient plans that preserve wealth across generations.

Duties

• Advise clients on estate, gift, and generation-skipping transfer tax strategies.
• Develop and implement comprehensive business succession plans for family-owned and closely held businesses.
• Structure and draft estate planning documents, including complex trusts.
• Coordinate with clients' financial advisors, accountants, and other professionals for integrated planning solutions.
• Analyze and plan for liquidity needs and tax liabilities related to personal and business interests.
• Assist with lifetime gifting strategies, intra-family transfers, entity restructuring, and charitable planning.
• Stay current on federal and state tax law developments impacting estate and succession planning.

Requirements

• J.D. from an accredited law school.
• LL.M. in Taxation preferred but not required.
• CAP designation a plus.
• Active bar membership required in one, but preferred in more, of the following: Nebraska, Iowa, and/or South Dakota.
• 5-10+ years of experience in estate planning, business succession planning, or a related field.
• Familiarity with business entity structures and ownership transfer mechanisms.
• Excellent drafting, analytical, and communication skills.
• Ability to build strong relationships with high-net-worth clients and business owners.
• Proven ability to manage complex planning projects independently or as part of a team.

Education

• J.D. from an accredited law school.

Certifications

• Active bar membership in one or more of the following: Nebraska, Iowa, and/or South Dakota.
