Job Overview:
A well-established civil rights law firm is seeking a Senior Associate Attorney to take on a general counsel role for nonprofit clients. The position requires a strong commitment to social justice advocacy, excellent legal research skills, and a high comfort level with maintaining strict data security protocols. The ideal candidate will have 3-8 years of litigation experience, with a focus on strategic planning and long-term vision, especially related to potential changes in federal law and executive action. 

Location:

  • Los Angeles, CA

Duties:

  • Provide general counsel services to nonprofit clients, offering strategic advice on potential legal and policy changes.
  • Oversee or directly conduct litigation related to civil rights and social justice matters.
  • Manage long-term planning and positioning of nonprofit organizations in response to potential changes in federal law or executive action.
  • Work closely with clients to understand their legal needs and goals, ensuring their long-term success.
  • Conduct legal research to support case strategies and to keep clients informed of any legal developments.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders, including coalitions, public relations teams, and political figures.
  • Support nonprofit clients in navigating federal criminal defense matters or national political issues, as needed.

Requirements:

  • 3-8 years of litigation experience.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills, with the ability to adapt to complex legal issues.
  • Comfort with strict data security protocols and an understanding of privacy concerns related to nonprofit organizations.
  • A demonstrated commitment to social justice advocacy and community impact.
  • Experience in coalition building, public relations, federal criminal defense, national politics, or a general counsel position is highly desirable but not mandatory.
  • Ability to manage long-term legal strategy and offer practical, strategic advice to clients.
  • Excellent communication and client management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate remotely with a diverse team.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Active membership in the California, New York, or D.C. Bar (preferred but not required).

Skills:

  • Expertise in civil rights law, nonprofit law, and public interest litigation.
  • Strong legal research and writing capabilities.
  • Ability to strategize and plan for long-term legal positioning.
  • Excellent interpersonal and client management skills.
  • Comfort with remote work and travel for in-person meetings, as necessary.
  • High attention to detail and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit organizational structures and legal requirements.
