A law firm in McLean is seeking an experienced Patent Agent with 3+ years of experience in preparing and prosecuting patents. The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing patent filing strategies, conducting client interviews for invention disclosures, preparing patent applications, analyzing office actions, and conducting interviews with Patent Office examiners. This role will also involve assisting in patent post-grant proceedings, preparing infringement and validity opinions, supporting patent litigation, and intellectual property transactions. The Patent Agent will work closely with attorneys, researchers, and clients to draft technical documents in clear English, manage multiple client dockets, and conduct legal and technical research.

 

Duties:

  • Develop and implement patent filing strategies.
  • Conduct client interviews to obtain invention disclosures.
  • Prepare patent applications under attorney supervision.
  • Analyze office actions and prepare responses.
  • Conduct interviews with Patent Office examiners.
  • Assist in preparing infringement and validity opinions.
  • Support patent post-grant proceedings and patent litigation.
  • Write scientific and technical documents clearly.
  • Manage multiple client dockets with various deadlines.
  • Conduct legal and technical research.
  • Follow ethical requirements set by the firm.

 

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in biological sciences (immunology, virology, molecular biology, etc.).
  • Successful completion of the patent agent examination.
  • 3+ years of experience preparing and prosecuting patents.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Highly motivated team player.
  • Ability to learn new technologies quickly.
  • Strong ability to write scientific and technical documents.
  • Ability to manage multiple matters with various deadlines.

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in cell and gene therapy, biochemistry, cell biology, or genetics.
  • Technical and analytical skills for complex patent analysis.
  • Effective communication with attorneys, staff, and clients.
  • Ability to provide information courteously and tactfully.

 

Education & Certifications:

  • Ph.D. in biological sciences.
  • Successful completion of the patent agent examination.
