Job Overview

A law firm seeks an accomplished Appellate Litigation Attorney in the Washington area. This role involves leading complex appellate matters, crafting persuasive legal arguments, and guiding litigation strategy at the appellate level. The position requires exceptional writing skills, deep appellate knowledge, and the ability to mentor junior attorneys while managing high-level legal work with independence and precision.

Duties

  • Lead appellate strategy and oversee all phases of appeals
  • Draft appellate briefs, legal memoranda, and motions
  • Present oral arguments before state and federal appellate courts
  • Analyze trial records and identify appealable issues
  • Conduct advanced legal research on complex legal questions
  • Collaborate with trial teams to preserve issues for appeal
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior attorneys and litigation teams
  • Maintain strong communication with clients regarding case progress and strategy

Requirements

  • 18 years of appellate or complex litigation experience
  • Demonstrated success handling appeals in state and/or federal courts
  • Exceptional legal writing and oral advocacy abilities
  • Strong analytical, issue-spotting, and research skills
  • Ability to manage a substantial appellate caseload independently
  • Admission to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction

Education

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school

Certifications

  • Active bar membership in good standing
  • Appellate practice certification or specialization (if applicable) is considered a plus
