I grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina. My dad was a Baptist minister. My mom was a kindergarten teacher. I admired how they helped many people through their chosen professions.

I also greatly admired lawyers in my hometown, particularly two highly respected lawyers in my church, Jim Nance and D. P. Russ. They were generous to our church and community and helped people in need. Based on their example, I decided to become a lawyer.

I attended Wake Forest University. While there, I served as President of the Student Government and as the Student Member of the Board of Trustees. I studied abroad as a Rotary Foundation Scholar at the University of Essex in England. I returned home and entered UNC School of Law and graduated with honors.

In 1987, I began law practice in Raleigh with Tharrington, Smith & Hargrove and was privileged to work with and be mentored by Wade Smith. I learned many things from Wade, most importantly that every day as a lawyer represents an opportunity to make the world a better place.

I have practiced law for over 30 years. During that time, I have been blessed to represent many special people who have honored me by allowing me to carry their legal burdens for them.

I have represented numerous children who suffered catastrophic injuries. The trust their parents placed in me to work for their children has humbled and inspired me. I became a lawyer to do something important. But I never dreamed I would do something as important as champion the cause of these courageous families in their battles to recover the money necessary to pay for a lifetime of medical care for their children.

On June 26, 2020, I was installed as President of the NC Bar Association and the NC Bar Foundation. I am deeply honored to be able to serve our membership of over 19,000 lawyers, judges, paralegals and law students. We strive to better our profession for the benefit of the public we serve and to promote the highest ideals of integrity, civility, service and professionalism. In June of 2020, I will begin my term as President of these two wonderful organizations. While serving in these leadership positions, I will primarily focus my law practice on volunteer service to these organizations and participation in pro bono and public service programs that benefit those in need in our state.

My wife, Joanna, and I are extremely proud of our four children. Charles Holt is a graduate of UNC Asheville, a musician and works in Raleigh. Grace Wells is a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill and their Occupational Therapy graduate school. Sarah Holt is a graduate of Wake Forest University and has worked in the Communications field. Caroline Wells is a graduate of Appalachian State University and plans to be an elementary teacher.
