The way you become a named partner, you have to be one of the founders of the firm or you have a lot of business or a lot of heft to give to the firms who make you a name partner. Something very significant about your background gives the law firm a reason to make you a new partner.
So, that would mean something along the lines of, you are very well known and your name, like, if you're a politician or, something, can bring a lot of heft to the firm. You get them a lot more visibility and credibility. If you have a huge amount of business that the law firm needs, they may make you a name partner, or obviously, if you're one of the founders of one of the few people that started a firm then they also have an incentive to make you a named partner because of that way as well.
