Realities Of Going Firm Life To In-House
[00:00:00] I'm currently an associate at one of the big labor and employment firms. Jackson Lewis, Fisher Phillips, et cetera. The hours aren't crushing, but firm life is still firm life.
Those are good firms. I like both those firms. Those are great places to work by the way.
I'm wondering what my realistic options are for going in-house and after how many years... I should do it in five to seven years is the sweet spot. Any advice?
I think at five to seven years, you can definitely go in-house.
And that would be a labor and employment attorney. One thing to understand too, a kind of important as a lot of times, if you want to work for the largest law firms, you often want to try to become a partner first.
But after you become a partner, it's much easier to move to larger firms. I'll say I like these firms, Fisher and Phillips and Jackson Lewis. And, there's some other ones like Ford and Harrison. People seem really happy at these firms, for the most part.
And, just like you said, these are big companies, firms, but they're just not as crazy. People seem to have much better experiences and these are labor and employment firms. Labor employment typically doesn't pay as much as a lot of other practice areas because companies retain labor and employment attorneys for ongoing [00:01:00] representation.
When they're getting a litigator and they're being sued and they need to pay high rates, they don't pay as much. It's not because they're not good firms. They just have a lot of ongoing work, but people seem a lot happier at these firms. I've noticed that a lot that, Fisher Phillips, Jackson Lewis, people are very happy and I actually hired an attorney, wants to work in our company from Jackson Lewis and she was excellent. And, I think that those are good firms, but if you want to go in-house, I think you can easily get a job in-house as a labor and employment attorney.
You can also get a job doing HR in companies where you could advise people, if you have that type of experience. That can be very helpful.
