Why It's Entirely Possible For Attorneys Who Are Veterans And PWDs To Get Experience
Harrison:[00:00:00] I received my license about a month ago and did not graduate from top law school. How would I get experience? I'm a disabled veteran, so, I'm not seeking a salary at the moment.
I guess that means you have a salary coming in, or you have money coming in. I think the best way to get experience is basically to do what you just said. That you're not looking for a salary, you're looking for experience is just exactly what you need to get in the door.
I mean that, that's not something a lot of people could say. Most people would say, I want this type of salary, this I'm gonna evaluate my options. If you're not looking for a salary, there's plenty of people that would hire you to give you experience, which would be public interest organizations and people that may service people with your type of disability. I don't know what that is, but whatever that is, there's probably organizations that do that and then need in-house legal counsel. So, something along those lines would be helpful. That's how I would recommend doing things. I had an instance once, it's a funny story, but anyway, where I went into a business and contracted some sort of virus in my eye and couldn't [00:01:00] see. And so I contacted, this is 30 years ago, maybe, but, for some reason, I contacted the department of justice. I don't know why, but they actually had someone reach out to me who was blind and talked to me about the issue that I was having with this business. It had something flying around that I touched or something, which I thought was interesting. So there's people that have disabilities, there's people that need for people with disabilities and all sorts of organizations. And so that's one thing, but if you're just trying to get experience and your disability is not what you want to lead with, which would make sense.
The best way to get a position, for most people on this call, if you're having a hard time getting in position the best way, is, to look at as many different places as you can. I'm a big advocate of doing research about the employers and wherever areas you want to work with and contacting them because it works and that's how people have been getting jobs.
