A law firm seeks a dedicated Healthcare Defense Attorney to join its Tampa, FL, office. In this in-person role, you will become part of a family-friendly, dog-welcoming environment where teamwork and mutual support are paramount. Our client base is statewide, and the practice has earned a national reputation for excellence in defending healthcare providers. Seasoned advocates, including former government attorneys, are encouraged to apply.

Duties

  • Defend medical professionals and healthcare entities in state and federal litigation, including administrative proceedings and regulatory investigations

  • Collaborate with claim adjusters, expert witnesses, and co-counsel to develop case strategies and negotiate pre-trial resolutions

  • Draft and file motions, responses, and briefs per court rules and procedural deadlines

  • Conduct depositions of parties, witnesses, and expert witnesses; prepare deponents and supporting staff for testimony

  • Participate in mediations, settlement conferences, and trial preparation, including drafting voir dire questions and jury instructions

  • Monitor and interpret changes in healthcare regulations, statutes, and industry best practices to inform defense tactics

  • Maintain clear, timely communication with clients, providing status updates and guidance on risk-mitigation strategies

  • Mentor junior attorneys and paralegals on document drafting, discovery protocols, and courtroom decorum

Requirements

  • Admission to the Florida Bar and good standing

  • 5–10 years of litigation experience, preferably defending healthcare providers, hospitals, or related entities

  • Proven track record managing complex civil or administrative cases from inception through resolution

  • Excellent legal research ability and familiarity with healthcare statutes (e.g., HIPAA, patient-safety regulations)

  • Strong courtroom presence and comfort in handling hearings, depositions, and trials independently

  • Ability to juggle multiple files, meet strict deadlines, and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced setting

  • Collaborative mindset, ready to work closely with a team of attorneys, paralegals, and support staff

Education

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school

Certifications

  • Board Certification in Health Law (preferred but not required)

  • Membership in relevant professional organizations (e.g., Florida Bar Health Law Section) encouraged

Skills

  • Exceptional written advocacy, including drafting motions, memoranda, and trial briefs

  • Outstanding oral communication for courtroom appearances, mediations, and client presentations

  • Keen analytical skills to assess medical records, expert reports, and regulatory compliance issues

  • Strong organizational aptitude for tracking case milestones, discovery deadlines, and court dates

  • Client-service orientation, fostering trust through clear explanations of complex legal concepts

  • Comfort with legal research platforms (Westlaw, LexisNexis) and e-discovery tools
