Trusts & Estates Associate Attorney

Job Overview:

A prominent law firm in Rochester, MN, seeks a detail-oriented and strategic legal professional to join its Trusts and Estates practice group. The role focuses on delivering comprehensive estate planning services, including will and trust drafting, estate administration, and succession planning. Ideal for an attorney with proven experience in estate law, this position offers a collaborative work environment and the opportunity to serve a diverse client base, including business owners and agricultural clients.

Duties:

  • Draft and finalize wills, trusts, healthcare directives, and power of attorney documents

  • Conduct advanced estate tax planning, including credit shelter trusts and disclaimer strategies

  • Prepare and submit federal and state estate and gift tax returns (Forms 706, 709, M706, M706Q)

  • Represent clients in probate court proceedings when required

  • Collaborate with partners and support teams to ensure seamless trust and estate administration

  • Guide clients on wealth transfer strategies, charitable giving, and insurance structures

  • Advise on family business and farm succession planning

  • Manage, mentor, and coordinate tasks among paralegals, clerks, and administrative staff

  • Maintain and organize case files and documentation

  • Communicate with clients during emotionally sensitive estate planning discussions

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years of focused experience in estate planning and probate administration

  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Minnesota

  • Active member in good standing with the American Bar Association

  • Familiarity with both federal and Minnesota estate and gift tax law

  • Demonstrated ability to handle complex estate plans and multi-generational wealth structures

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills for high-emotion client interactions

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school

  • Undergraduate degree (B.A. or B.S.)

Certifications:

  • Active Minnesota Bar License

Skills:

  • Strong legal drafting and analytical thinking

  • Expertise in real estate and property law as it pertains to estate matters
