A law firm seeks a dynamic and driven Civil Litigation Attorney to join its Leawood, Kansas, office. The successful candidate will be immersed in all phases of civil dispute resolution—ranging from pre-suit investigation through trial—in a variety of substantive areas, including medical malpractice, long-term care, education law, personal injury, and sophisticated construction and commercial conflicts. This full-time, on-site position offers exposure to high-profile matters, collaborative mentorship, and a supportive benefits package encompassing health, dental, retirement, and profit-sharing programs.

Duties

  • Manage the entire discovery process: conduct client intake interviews, depose witnesses and expert consultants, and draft and respond to interrogatories, requests for production, and requests for admission.

  • Prepare and present written case analyses and strategy memos to senior attorneys and clients.

  • Conduct legal research and compose persuasive briefs, motions, and memoranda on complex civil issues.

  • Represent clients at hearings, status conferences, and motion practice in both state and federal courts.

  • Participate actively in trial preparation, including drafting jury instructions, outlining exhibits, and assisting with witness preparation.

  • Serve as lead or co-counsel in courtroom proceedings, including bench trials and jury trials.

  • Evaluate incoming matters for viability, potential exposure, and strategic direction, advising both the firm and clients accordingly.

  • Travel regularly for out-of-town depositions, mediations, and trial commitments as required.

Requirements

  • Admission to the Missouri and Kansas bar in good standing (active licenses required).

  • Minimum of 2–4 years of civil litigation experience (clerkships or related internships may be considered).

  • Demonstrated ability to manage a diverse docket and balance competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong track record of conducting depositions, motion practice, and, preferably, trial participation.

  • Excellent analytical capabilities: ability to dissect complex factual scenarios, identify key legal issues, and formulate strategic approaches.

  • Comfortable with frequent travel for depositions and trial sessions.

  • Keen attention to detail, coupled with a proactive, solutions-oriented mindset.

  • Ability to cultivate trusted relationships with colleagues, experts, and clients in high-stakes matters.

Education

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.

Certifications

  • Active membership in the Missouri State Bar.

  • Active membership in the Kansas State Bar.

Skills

  • Exceptional written advocacy: drafting motions, briefs, and correspondence that influence decision-makers.

  • Strong oral advocacy and courtroom presence, capable of delivering opening statements, closing arguments, and persuasive oral motions.

  • Proficient in conducting and defending fact and expert witness depositions.

  • Advanced legal research skills, with proficiency in Westlaw, LexisNexis, or equivalent platforms.

  • Effective negotiation skills for settlement discussions and alternative dispute resolution.

  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, to collaborate with team members and interface with clients.

  • Technologically adept: comfortable using case management software (e.g., Clio, MyCase), e-filing systems, and standard office productivity tools.

  • Network-building and client development aptitude, to contribute to the firm’s growth.
