Job Overview

A law firm seeks a Patent Senior Associate Attorney or Counsel to join its Intellectual Property practice in Providence, RI. The successful candidate will collaborate with the Patent Prosecution & Counseling team to support a variety of intellectual property matters, focusing on mechanical, electrical, and computer arts.

Duties

  • Evaluate the patentability of innovations in mechanical, electrical, and related technology fields.
  • Prepare and prosecute U.S. patent applications and coordinate with foreign counsel on international filings.
  • Manage IP due diligence projects and strategic portfolio management.
  • Represent clients in post-grant proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
  • Conduct legal and technical research and analysis on patent and IP issues, including FTO, validity, and infringement opinions.
  • Collaborate with attorneys, clients, and business teams to develop and execute IP strategies.
  • Serve as a liaison for interdepartmental initiatives and interact with outside counsel.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in mechanical or electrical patent prosecution, preferably in a law firm setting.
  • State bar admission in good standing.
  • Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Experience with post-grant proceedings before the USPTO preferred.
  • Diligence experience required.
  • Strong technical background in mechanical, electrical, or related scientific disciplines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.

Education

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

Certifications

  • State bar admission.
  • USPTO registration.
