Job Overview:
A premier law firm is seeking a Patent Associate with 1–4 years of experience in patent prosecution. This role is suited for technically skilled attorneys with a strong academic background and practical experience in engineering or computational sciences. A demonstrated interest in the life sciences—whether academic or professional—is highly desirable. The position offers opportunities to work closely with cutting-edge technologies, support innovative clients, and contribute to sophisticated IP portfolios.

Location:

  • Washington, D.C.

Duties:

  • Draft and prosecute domestic and international patent applications

  • Conduct patentability, freedom-to-operate, and due diligence analyses

  • Advise clients on intellectual property strategy and portfolio management

  • Collaborate with inventors, engineers, and in-house counsel

  • Stay current on legal developments and emerging technology trends

  • Participate in business development and client relationship initiatives

Requirements:

  • 1–4 years of law firm experience in patent prosecution

  • Demonstrated technical expertise in one or more of the following:

    • Electrical Engineering

    • Mechanical Engineering

    • Chemical Engineering

    • Materials Science

    • Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning

  • Demonstrable interest in life sciences is preferred

  • Strong client service mindset and time management skills

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited U.S. law school

  • Advanced degrees (MS or PhD) in a relevant technical field preferred

Certifications:

  • Admission to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) required

  • Active membership in at least one state bar (preferred: corresponding to office location)

Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication

  • Superior technical and legal research abilities

  • High attention to detail and precision in drafting

  • Strong interpersonal skills for collaboration across teams

  • Ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously with minimal supervision
