Job Overview

A prestigious appellate law firm located in Washington, DC is seeking a Civil Litigation Associate to join its litigation team. This role offers an excellent opportunity for junior attorneys to gain hands-on experience handling a variety of civil litigation matters from inception through resolution. Ideal candidates will have experience in depositions, discovery, and motion practice, and must be licensed in Washington, DC, Virginia, or Maryland.

Duties

  • Manage litigation matters from inception through trial

  • Draft and argue motions, pleadings, and discovery responses

  • Conduct and defend depositions

  • Represent clients at mediations, hearings, and trial

  • Collaborate with senior attorneys on strategy and case development

  • Perform legal research and draft memoranda

  • Prepare detailed case summaries and updates

Requirements

  • 1–3 years of litigation experience in a law firm or equivalent clerkship experience

  • Experience with depositions, motions practice, and discovery

  • Licensed to practice law in DC and VA or MD (DC licensure required within one year if not already licensed)

  • Additional bar admissions in NY, NJ, or WV are considered a plus

  • Strong organizational and case management skills

Education

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school

Certifications

  • Active license in DC, VA, or MD (or willingness to obtain DC bar license within one year)

Skills

  • Excellent research, writing, and oral advocacy skills

  • Detail-oriented with a strong work ethic

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively

  • Effective communication with clients, colleagues, and court personnel

  • Proficient in legal research platforms and case management tools
