Job Overview

An established law firm is seeking a Technology Specialist, Patent Agent with a background in computer science to join its Intellectual Property team. This role involves patent prosecution, opinion work, due diligence projects, and general IP counseling. The position provides an opportunity to work closely with senior attorneys and contribute to diverse intellectual property matters.

Location

  • Boston, MA

Duties

  • Review technical disclosures and participate in client interviews to understand new inventions.
  • Conduct literature and patent database searches to assess the patentability of inventions.
  • Draft written assessments on the prospects of obtaining patent protection.
  • Write and draft patent applications.
  • Prepare responses to communications from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Develop arguments for patentability to present to Patent Office Examiners.
  • Review patents as part of IP due diligence for potential acquisitions or mergers.
  • Guide, mentor, or serve as a resource for other team members as needed.
  • Take on additional responsibilities as needed for various IP projects.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree (Master’s level) in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Deep expertise in software, including knowledge of programming, machine learning, networking, process control, and other applied technologies.

Education

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

Certifications

  • Relevant certifications in intellectual property or patent law are advantageous but not required.

Skills

  • Strong analytical and research skills.
  • Proficiency in drafting and prosecuting patents.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team on complex IP matters.
