"Do you suggest an attorney with seven plus years of experience in Chicago work on getting business before applying to a position in another firm?"
No, you don't need to, if you can that's great. The other question too, is does an advanced degree or LLM or MBA improve your employability and job security?
No, it doesn't. If you have seven plus years of experience and you do have a job, my advice would be to work on getting business before applying to another firm. If the work in your firm is slowing down, you need another job and there's nothing wrong with applying to other firms. You shouldn't go someplace where there's a lot of work before trying to get a job. The other thing I would say is an LLM or MBA does not necessarily improve your employability or job security. LLMs in certain practice areas like tax or healthcare law, or executive compensation, and a few other things can improve your job security to some extent, but not really. The only thing you can ever do to improve your job security, is make sure you get as much experience as you possibly can as much business as you possibly can and just work on it.
The thing is it's like compound interest. If you start building the relationships, now you're gonna have more relationships and more business five years from now than if you start three years from now. The earlier you start, the better off you're gonna be.
