Job Title: Partner or Associate Attorney - Exempt Organizations

Job Overview:
A respected law firm based in Troy, MI, is seeking a dedicated attorney to support its practice representing nonprofit and tax-exempt clients. This position provides a meaningful opportunity to work with mission-driven entities making a social impact. The ideal candidate will bring 3–6 years of legal experience advising nonprofits and demonstrate a deep commitment to supporting the sector through tailored legal guidance. This role may be based in Troy or performed remotely from another location.

Duties:

  • Provide legal guidance to nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations on formation, governance, and operational matters

  • Prepare and file applications for federal and state tax exemption

  • Draft and review foundational organizational documents and internal governance policies

  • Advise clients on compliance with nonprofit tax obligations and public charity requirements

  • Support clients with impact investing structures such as program-related investments (PRIs)

  • Negotiate and draft contracts, grant agreements, and service arrangements

  • Conduct legal research and deliver written and verbal advice on nonprofit regulatory and compliance issues

  • Assist with matters involving political activity, lobbying, and advocacy compliance

  • Navigate rules related to federal funding, including grant management and restrictions

Requirements:

  • 3-6 years of experience practicing law with a focus on nonprofit and tax-exempt clients

  • Familiarity with the Internal Revenue Code provisions applicable to tax-exempt organizations

  • Ability to manage a diverse caseload and work with a variety of nonprofit clients

  • Interest in advising mission-focused organizations such as charities, foundations, religious institutions, and advocacy groups

  • Previous exposure to issues surrounding federal grants or political organizations is advantageous

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school

Certifications:

  • Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction

  • Eligibility to practice in Michigan or willingness to obtain admission (waiver or reciprocity acceptable for remote candidates)

Skills:

  • Strong legal research and writing capabilities

  • Excellent communication and client service skills

  • Ability to handle sensitive issues with discretion and professionalism

  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and organizational abilities

  • Familiarity with nonprofit corporate governance and compliance frameworks
