Workers' Compensation Defense Associate Attorney

Job Overview:
A law firm located in Agoura Hills, CA is expanding its litigation team and is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Associate Attorney to support its Workers' Compensation Defense practice. This opportunity is ideal for a licensed California attorney with hands-on experience managing end-to-end workers' compensation cases and an interest in contributing to a firm known for its long-standing relationships with private employers, public entities, and insurers across California. Flexibility in work location is available, with remote options provided for those able to attend necessary in-person proceedings.

Duties:

  • Represent clients in workers' compensation cases under California law

  • Handle case management from inception through resolution

  • Prepare and deliver Initial Defense Analyses (IDAs) for new claims

  • Evaluate exposure and outline case strategies

  • Conduct applicant, witness, and expert depositions

  • Participate in QME (Qualified Medical Evaluator) evaluations

  • Attend and represent clients at WCAB hearings and trials

  • Collaborate with claims representatives, risk professionals, and HR executives

  • Drive cases toward timely, cost-effective closure

Requirements:

  • Licensed and active member of the California State Bar

  • Prior experience practicing workers' compensation law in California (defense experience strongly preferred)

  • Comfortable working in a fully digital, paperless office environment

  • Capable of maintaining a monthly billable target of 190 hours

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school

Certifications:

  • Active California Bar License in good standing

Skills:

  • Strong legal writing and case analysis skills

  • Confident communicator with clients and opposing counsel

  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook

  • Familiarity with MerusCase legal software is a plus

  • Ability to independently manage litigation tasks and meet deadlines
