Job Overview:

A well-established law firm in Alexandria, VA, specializing in intellectual property law, is seeking a highly skilled mid-level to senior-level Patent Agent. The role primarily focuses on patent counseling, procurement, and opinions, with opportunities to engage in licensing and enforcement matters. The position is designed for a professional with strong technical expertise in biology or biotechnology, offering a dynamic work environment where creativity and precision are highly valued. This position is a remote opportunity, with an option to work in-office or hybrid in Wilmington, DE, Philadelphia, PA, or Alexandria, VA.

Duties:

• Provide strategic counsel to clients on intellectual property matters.
• Manage patent procurement activities, including:
  • Preparation and prosecution of complex patent applications.
  • Oversee prosecution of global patent portfolios, coordinating with foreign patent counsel for international filings.
  • Collaborate with inventors, technical experts, and patent portfolio managers to ensure comprehensive protection.
• Conduct due diligence for IP-related opinions, including:
  • Patentability analysis.
  • Freedom to operate assessments.
  • Infringement and invalidity analyses.
• Develop and deliver high-quality patent opinions and IP strategies tailored to client needs.

Requirements:

• 4+ years of experience in patent prosecution, ideally in a biotech or biology-related field.
• Ph.D. or Master’s degree in a relevant biological science discipline (e.g., molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, biotechnology).
• Active USPTO registration.
• Proven track record in managing patent portfolios, with a focus on global patent strategies.
• Ability to communicate complex technical information effectively, both verbally and in writing.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with exceptional attention to detail.
• Highly motivated, self-directed, and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

Education:

• Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Biology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or a related field.

Certifications:

• Active USPTO Registration is required.
