Job Title: Partner or Associate Attorney - Exempt Organizations

Job Overview:
A respected law firm located in Grand Rapids, MI, is seeking a dedicated attorney with demonstrated experience in nonprofit law and tax-exempt entities. This position offers the opportunity to work extensively with mission-driven organizations that create meaningful community impact. Duties:

  • Advise charitable, tax-exempt, and nonprofit organizations on a wide range of legal issues

  • Draft and review foundational documents, including bylaws, articles of incorporation, and operational policies

  • Guide governance practices and board responsibilities

  • Assist with obtaining and maintaining federal tax-exempt status, including IRS Form 1023 preparation and compliance

  • Negotiate and draft contracts and agreements tailored to nonprofit operations

  • Conduct research and provide counsel on nonprofit tax regulations and IRS compliance

  • Support clients in connection with program-related investments (PRIs) and charitable fundraising activities

  • Advise on matters involving political activity regulations and lobbying compliance

  • Offer strategic advice regarding federal grants and public funding requirements

  • Participate in internal knowledge-sharing and contribute to nonprofit-focused practice development

Requirements:

  • 3-6 years of experience advising nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations

  • Deep familiarity with IRS rules, nonprofit governance, and public charity operations

  • Ability to handle a broad array of nonprofit legal matters independently or with minimal supervision

  • Excellent drafting, analytical, and client communication skills

  • Strong commitment to working with purpose-driven clients and social impact entities

  • Experience with 501(c)(3) and other tax-exempt categories; knowledge of 527 and 501(c)(4) organizations is advantageous

  • Prior exposure to political compliance and federal grant law is preferred

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school

Certifications:

  • Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction

  • Eligibility to gain admission to the Michigan Bar (if not currently licensed in Michigan)

Skills:

  • Strong legal research and writing capabilities

  • Keen attention to detail and organizational proficiency

  • Adaptability in working with diverse nonprofit missions and operational models

  • Effective negotiation and interpersonal communication skills

  • Familiarity with nonprofit software or IRS e-filing systems is a plus

Job Location:

  • Grand Rapids, MI

  • Other firm offices in Detroit, Troy, or Ann Arbor may be considered
