Job Overview
A prominent law firm based in San Francisco, CA is actively seeking a seasoned litigation attorney with a focus on patent and intellectual property disputes. The ideal candidate will bring hands-on experience managing complex cases, a proactive mindset, and a strong foundation in technologies related to electrical engineering or computer science. This opportunity is presented by a legal recruiting firm on behalf of our client law firm.

Duties

• Lead and contribute to high-stakes patent litigation matters in federal court and before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB)

• Draft legal memoranda, pleadings, motions, and discovery responses across various phases of litigation

• Prepare and respond to infringement and invalidity contentions

• Participate in claim construction proceedings and prepare related filings

• Handle fact and expert discovery, including depositions and expert reports

• Develop and execute case strategy, including settlement, trial, and appeal considerations

• Oversee preparation of pre-trial materials such as exhibit lists, motions in limine, and witness outlines

• Represent clients at hearings, mediations, and trials as needed

• Mentor junior associates and contribute to internal team development

Requirements

• 4-8 years of direct patent litigation experience

• Substantial exposure to federal court litigation and PTAB proceedings

• Demonstrated ability to manage a case from pre-filing to resolution or appeal

• Experience with technical subject matter in software, hardware, or telecommunications

• Skilled in communicating with both technical and legal professionals

• Track record of professional independence and leadership on matters

Education

• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school

Certifications

• Admission to a state bar in good standing (California preferred)

• USPTO Registration Number is strongly preferred

The San Francisco office of this mid-sized firm is engaged primarily in litigation and general business, although the firm boasts a solid regulatory and administrative law practice and a respectable labor/employment practice. The firm has a strong pro bono commitment; associates receive full billable hour credit for approved pro bono work, and overall, pro bono comprises 3-5% of all work. The billable hour target is 1850.
