Job Title: Patent Agent/Advisor (Medtech)

Job Overview:
A prominent law firm based in Reston, VA, is seeking a technically skilled and driven Patent Agent to support its fast-paced intellectual property team. This role is ideal for a candidate with an engineering background in mechanical, biomedical, or chemical disciplines, combined with experience in patent preparation and prosecution. The successful candidate will contribute to strategic IP development and client counseling in the medtech and related sectors.

Duties:

  • Conduct comprehensive prior art searches to support patentability and freedom-to-operate assessments

  • Evaluate technical literature, patents, and scientific materials in support of prosecution, strategy, and litigation

  • Draft patent applications with attention to technical accuracy and legal scope

  • Respond to office actions from the USPTO

  • Collaborate with attorneys and technical experts in client-facing and internal meetings

  • Assist in the preparation of IP strategy documentation and portfolio management

Requirements:

  • At least 1 year of experience in a law firm setting focusing on patent work

  • Demonstrated industry knowledge or hands-on experience in mechanical, biomedical, or chemical engineering

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to quickly learn new technologies

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field

  • An advanced technical degree is a plus

Certifications:

  • USPTO registration required or eligibility to sit for the registration exam

Skills:

  • Deep technical acumen in engineering or medical device technologies

  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly

  • Proficiency in patent research databases and drafting software

  • Collaborative, self-directed, and organized work style
