My clients, a husband and wife, looked at me and we exchanged smiles. Both of them exhaled for the first time in over two years without the weight of an insurance claim pressing down on their shoulders. I thought about all those shoulders had to bear since I had first met them at their home. Half of his body had been immobilized as he recovered from surgery on his fractured spine. She had broken her neck as well on that fateful day, when the wheel from a passing trailer came off because the driver had failed to tighten the lug nuts. The wheel bounced across three lanes of traffic and over the center median, slamming into their van. It was a miracle that the two of them hadn't been paralyzed or killed. Family and friends rallied around them, but understandably had to return to their own lives after a while. The sympathy of others would eventually fade but, unfortunately, the consequences of the kind of injuries my clients suffered wouldn't. It was humbling to take a part of this journey with them. I had become more than their lawyer, and they certainly were more than just "clients" to me. Many tears were shed along the way. Sometimes all I could do was listen, but that was enough. Today there were no more tears, just smiles. Their case had come to an end, and that end marked a new beginning for this couple. The settlement couldn't give them their old lives back, but it would give them independence, and the resources necessary to make a good life for their family.
