The firm was established in 1981 by Tim Cocks (Preeminent Admiralty, Shipping & Maritime Lawyer ? Doyle's Guide 2019) and Graeme Macnish, both partners having considerable experience in the maritime, general insurance and commercial litigation fields.

Ashley Nichols commenced employment with the firm in late 1981 and became a partner in 1985. During 2007 Waqas Naseem was appointed a partner and Julia Routley associate partner.

In late 2011, the firm became an incorporated legal practice. The firm continues to be led by Tim Cocks and Ashley Nichols, now as Directors, and with Waqas Naseem and Julia Routley continuing employment, now as Associate Directors.

In April 2019, Ashwin Nair re-commenced employment with the firm as Special Counsel.

The firm was established specifically to cater for clients in the maritime, transport, insurance and related commercial fields.

The firm prides itself on its level of close coordination with clients. Each of the members has an ongoing personal contact with their clients. It is a matter of strict procedure that all clients are kept personally informed of all aspects of matters in respect of which instructions have been received on a continuous and regular basis. We meet our ship-owning, P & I and chartering clients' emergency needs by providing a 24-hour and 7 day a week availability and service covering all ports in Western Australia.

The firm has been involved in most of the major maritime casualties off the coast of Western Australia over the past 31 years, many of which have ultimately been considered in the Supreme Court of Western Australia, the Federal Court of Australia and the High Court of Australia.
