Junior Litigation Attorney

Job Overview

A law firm seeks a Junior Litigation Attorney in New York City, NY. This role involves engaging in complex legal work with significant financial, procedural, or policy consequences, particularly in the areas of special education, disability, and civil rights.

Duties

• Prepare and try complex cases involving special education, disability, and civil rights.
• Provide training on compliance with federal and state laws and regulations.
• Negotiate and implement settlements of special education claims.
• Conduct legal investigations and confer with relevant departments.
• Prepare and argue cases and appeals in administrative tribunals and courts.
• Analyze legislation and regulation impacts.
• Supervise associates in case preparation and settlement recommendations.
• Engage in community-based advocacy and outreach.
• Lead confidential investigations and advocacy projects.
• Maintain effective relationships with agencies and organizations.
• Travel within New York State and occasionally outside of state.

Requirements

• Admission to the New York State Bar (New Jersey and/or Connecticut a plus).
• At least three years of progressively responsible legal experience.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong legal research and writing skills.
• Ability to analyze complex problems and develop creative solutions.
• Experience working with or sensitivity to individuals with disabilities.
• Ability to work independently with appropriate supervision.
• Knowledge of laws, rights, and services for people with disabilities.
• Must have a sense of humor.

Education

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree.

Certifications

• Admission to the New York State Bar.

Skills

• Effective communication skills for investigations and legal proceedings.
• Leadership in case planning or project coordination.
• Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
