Job Overview

A leading global law firm is seeking a Counsel, AI Risk & Compliance to support the evaluation, governance, and implementation of artificial intelligence technologies across the organization. This position operates at the intersection of legal, technology, risk management, regulatory compliance, and professional responsibility. The role works closely with technology, security, procurement, marketing, business development, and operational teams to develop governance frameworks and manage the legal, ethical, operational, and reputational risks associated with AI adoption and innovation.

Duties

  • Serve as the primary legal advisor on AI-related tools, platforms, vendors, and initiatives.
  • Partner with internal stakeholders throughout the lifecycle of AI projects, from evaluation and implementation to ongoing governance.
  • Provide legal guidance regarding AI technologies, firm systems, client information, and operational infrastructure.
  • Advise on privacy, cybersecurity, intellectual property, confidentiality, data governance, and professional responsibility matters.
  • Support AI vendor due diligence, contract negotiations, and risk management reviews.
  • Develop governance standards and legal frameworks related to AI vendors and technology practices.
  • Evaluate risks associated with emerging AI systems, including automation, data security, access controls, and operational integrity.
  • Collaborate with information security and privacy teams to assess the impact of AI technologies on existing control environments.
  • Review and advise on the use of firm and client data in connection with AI development, testing, training, and deployment.
  • Monitor and analyze evolving AI laws, regulations, and industry developments and provide practical guidance.
  • Develop policies, training programs, and guidance materials regarding responsible AI use and compliance requirements.
  • Assist with AI-related communications, proposals, presentations, and external messaging regarding governance practices.

Requirements

  • Significant experience in one or more of the following areas: technology transactions, privacy, cybersecurity, data governance, regulatory compliance, product counseling, or professional responsibility.
  • Experience advising on artificial intelligence, machine learning, technology governance, or data use matters in a law firm, corporate, or regulated environment.
  • Familiarity with AI governance frameworks, privacy regulations, cybersecurity principles, vendor risk management, and data rights issues.
  • Ability to advise on complex, cross-functional projects involving emerging technologies and evolving regulatory requirements.
  • Experience developing policies, training materials, templates, and compliance processes.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Technical understanding sufficient to collaborate effectively with technology and information security professionals.

Education and Certifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active bar membership in good standing.
