Job Overview:
A nationally recognized trial law firm is seeking a detail-oriented and highly skilled Appellate Attorney to support its litigation teams across a range of complex and specialized cases. This position is ideal for a legal professional who excels in legal research, persuasive writing, and oral argument. The role offers an intellectually stimulating environment and the opportunity to influence high-stakes cases at the appellate level. 

Location:

  • Washington, DC

Duties:

  • Collaborate with trial attorneys to preserve and frame appellate issues during litigation

  • Draft major trial motions and legal memoranda to guide appellate strategy

  • Conduct comprehensive legal research across jurisdictions and subject areas

  • Identify appellate issues and develop legal theories and procedural approaches

  • Prepare and file appellate briefs, motions, and petitions

  • Present oral arguments before state and federal appellate courts

  • Ensure compliance with exacting standards and procedural rules of appellate courts nationwide

Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience with appellate briefing and/or oral argument

  • Meticulous attention to legal standards, appellate rules, and deadlines

  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative legal team

  • Commitment to legal clarity, precision, and excellence

  • In-office availability with remote work flexibility as needed

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school

Certifications:

  • Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction

  • Admission to appellate courts preferred (or willingness to obtain)

Skills:

  • Exceptional legal research and writing skills

  • Strong analytical thinking and persuasive advocacy

  • Ability to communicate complex legal ideas clearly and effectively

  • Familiarity with standards of review, appellate procedures, and legal formatting

  • Preference for consistency in grammar, including use of the Oxford comma
