Job Overview:

A highly reputable law firm is seeking an experienced Patent Agent to join their Intellectual Property team. This role involves handling complex and sensitive patent matters in the semiconductor industry, specifically drafting patent applications and responding to communications from the USPTO. The ideal candidate will be proficient in patent preparation and prosecution with at least 2 years of experience, particularly in the high-tech sector. This is a full-time, exempt position offering a competitive salary based on location and experience.

Location:

  • Washington, D.C.

Duties:

  • Prepare draft patent applications, incorporating scientific aspects of inventions.
  • Draft responses to communications from U.S. and foreign patent offices on scientific and factual matters.
  • Discuss technical details of inventions with clients and inventors, and provide attorneys with reports on these discussions.
  • Act as a liaison between inventors and the Patent & Trademark Office during the patent application process.
  • Advise attorneys on technology and perform investigative research on relevant technologies.
  • Organize, analyze, review, and summarize various patent-related documents.
  • Communicate with clients, vendors, PTO personnel, and legal staff via email, phone, and in person.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
  • Identify and resolve complex patent issues, providing strategic solutions.
  • Maintain confidentiality while interacting professionally with clients, attorneys, and staff.
  • Provide guidance and direction to legal support staff on technical issues.
  • Stay updated on technology trends and recommend improvements in technology practices.
  • Perform other miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Material Engineering, Physics, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Licensed to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) preferred.
  • At least 2 years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution, particularly in the semiconductor industry.
  • Strong investigative, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent ability to interpret research findings and prepare detailed reports.
  • Knowledge of patent documentation principles, procedures, and standards.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Capability to prioritize and manage tasks under strict deadlines.
  • Proficient in using various software applications and office equipment.
  • Knowledge of time management and project management strategies.
  • Ability to travel, including potential out-of-town travel for client needs.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline such as Electrical Engineering, Material Engineering, Physics, or Chemical Engineering.

Certifications:

  • USPTO registration (preferred).

  • Expertise in preparing complex patent documentation.
  • Strong understanding of semiconductor technologies.
