Job Overview

A law firm seeks a highly motivated Intellectual Property Associate with at least 2 years of experience in life sciences patenting in Chicago, IL. This role offers the opportunity to work on sophisticated patent matters for a diverse client base, including Fortune 50 companies and innovative start-ups.

Duties

  • Prepare, file, and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications in the life sciences sector.
  • Conduct freedom-to-operate, IP due diligence, infringement, validity, and patent landscape searches and analyses.
  • Advise clients on patent issues throughout the product lifecycle, including strategic consultation and portfolio management.
  • Collaborate with clients, colleagues, the USPTO, and foreign associates on patent prosecution matters.
  • Contribute to a collaborative, entrepreneurial environment supporting professional growth and client service excellence.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of experience as a patent attorney in biotechnology.
  • Experience in preparing and prosecuting patent applications related to biologics or large-molecule technologies.
  • Experience in conducting searches and analyses for freedom-to-operate, IP due diligence, infringement, validity, and patent landscape assessments.
  • Registration to practice before the USPTO in good standing.
  • Admission to at least one State bar.
  • Prior law firm experience preferred.

Education

  • Advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in biological sciences, e.g., molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, immunology, genetics, etc.

Certifications

  • Registration to practice before the USPTO.

This full-service firm in Chicago has a nationally recognized reputation in many of its practice areas. With additional offices throughout the Midwest and the East Coast, the firm has over 200 lawyers ready to serve their clients. New associates are assigned to one of five sections: Bond/Municipal Finance, Business, Labor, Litigation, or Real Estate. New associates are encouraged to let the firm know what areas interest them, but all attorneys are expected to be willing to work in a wide variety of areas. New associates are also provided with early client contact. While some associates arent ecstatic with the firms bonus structure, this mid-tier firm does pay higher than many similar firms in the area.
