Job Overview

A law firm seeks a patent agent with expertise in biomedical device technology for its offices in California and New York City. The ideal candidate will have over three years of experience in patent prosecution and a background in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, material science, or related fields. Experience in PTAB proceedings is advantageous but not mandatory.

Duties

  • Prepare draft patent applications, incorporating scientific aspects of inventions.
  • Draft responses to communications from U.S. and foreign patent offices.
  • Evaluate and report on technological aspects of inventions.
  • Investigate technologies and discuss scientific aspects with clients and inventors.
  • Identify and analyze complex patent issues and implement solutions.
  • Act as liaison between inventors and the Patent & Trademark Office.
  • Communicate with staff, clients, and PTO personnel professionally.
  • Organize and prioritize tasks efficiently under time constraints.
  • Stay updated on technology trends and patent prosecution issues.
  • Enter, maintain, and analyze data for reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, material science, or related field preferred; Master's or PhD is advantageous.
  • Qualified to sit for the patent bar; preferably licensed to practice before USPTO.
  • Strong investigative and problem resolution skills.
  • Knowledge of drafting complex patent documentation.
  • Advanced knowledge of research principles and methods.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Outlook, Word, Excel, and prosecution docketing systems.
  • Ability to manage confidentiality and ethical responsibilities.
  • Flexibility to work additional hours as needed.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field preferred; Master's or PhD is advantageous.

Certifications

  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Skills

  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret research findings.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
