This position offers a unique opportunity for attorneys with a background in oil and gas law—or those with significant industry expertise—to contribute to a growing legal practice. The role combines challenging legal work with a flexible and balanced approach to billable requirements, allowing for professional growth within a collaborative environment.

Duties:

  • Draft and review oil and gas title opinions for clients involved in energy development and land acquisition.

  • Analyze complex chains of title and advise clients on potential risks, defects, and solutions.
  • Collaborate with landmen, title examiners, and other industry professionals to gather and validate critical information.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to clients through clear, precise written opinions and legal reports.
  • Stay current on legal developments related to oil and gas law, property rights, and energy regulations.
  • Support litigation or transactional matters as needed, including dispute resolution and contract review related to mineral rights.

Requirements:

  • Prior experience preparing oil and gas title opinions, OR substantial industry experience in land, title, or mineral rights management within the energy sector.
  • Exceptional legal writing skills, with the ability to draft thorough and client-focused opinions.
  • Keen attention to detail and analytical thinking, particularly when working with complex historical data and legal documents.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects under deadlines, while maintaining accuracy and client satisfaction.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. state. (Licensure in Colorado or neighboring oil-producing states preferred.)

Certifications:

  • None required, though certifications related to energy law, land management, or oil and gas title examination are a plus.

Skills:

  • Strong legal research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and client advisory abilities.
  • Proficiency in reviewing, interpreting, and summarizing legal descriptions, deeds, leases, and other land-related documents.
  • Comfortable working both independently and as part of a collaborative legal team.
  • Strong organizational skills with a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Benefits:

  • Flexible work environment with an emphasis on work-life balance.
  • Reasonable billable hour requirement (approximately 1,600 hours annually).
  • Opportunity for professional growth in a smaller firm environment, where contributions are recognized and advancement is encouraged.
  • Collaborative and supportive team culture.
