Job Overview

A law firm seeks a Patent Agent with expertise in biotechnology to join their San Diego, CA office. The role involves engaging in patent prosecution, freedom-to-operate analysis, and due diligence, working with clients on innovative biotechnology projects to secure patent protection and develop intellectual property portfolios.

Duties

  • Manage patent portfolios and coordinate prosecution with foreign associates.
  • Collaborate with scientists and inventors to draft patent applications.
  • Draft office action responses and prosecute patent applications.
  • Assess scientific literature, patents, and patent application documents.
  • Conduct patent-landscape and freedom-to-operate searches.
  • Assist with IP diligence for potential investments and capital markets transactions.

Requirements

  • USPTO admission required.
  • Ph.D. in Immunology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or related fields preferred.
  • At least three years of patent prosecution experience preferred.
  • Experience drafting patent applications from invention disclosures or inventor interviews.
  • Ability to present scientific concepts to both scientists and non-scientists.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting.

Education

  • Ph.D. in relevant biological sciences field.

Certifications

  • USPTO admission.

Skills

  • Proficiency in patent prosecution and IP portfolio management.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities.
