Job Overview:

A leading law firm is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Patent Agent to join its Intellectual Property team. This position involves working on complex and sensitive client matters in the semiconductor industry, including preparing patent applications and responses to communications from the USPTO. The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution, a technical background in fields such as electrical engineering or material science, and a proven ability to manage high-level technical work in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

Location:

Duties:

  • Prepare draft patent applications with a focus on the scientific aspects of inventions.
  • Draft responses to communications from U.S. and foreign patent offices, addressing scientific and factual matters.
  • Discuss the technical aspects of inventions with clients and inventors, and provide detailed reports to attorneys.
  • Serve as a liaison between inventors and the Patent & Trademark Office during the patent application process.
  • Advise attorneys on the technological aspects of inventions, conducting additional research as necessary.
  • Organize, analyze, and summarize patent-related documents.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, staff, vendors, and PTO personnel via email, phone, and in person.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple tasks, ensuring deadlines are met in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
  • Identify and resolve complex patent issues with innovative solutions.
  • Interact professionally with clients, attorneys, and colleagues, maintaining confidentiality and courtesy.
  • Provide guidance to legal support staff on technical matters.
  • Stay up to date with emerging technology trends and make relevant recommendations.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Material Engineering, Physics, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Licensed to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution, particularly in semiconductor technologies.
  • Strong problem-solving, investigative, and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of patent documentation principles, procedures, and standards.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex technical information to a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in using various software applications and office equipment.
  • Ability to work under time constraints and prioritize competing tasks.
  • Ability to travel for client needs, including occasional out-of-town assignments.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Material Engineering, Physics, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical field.

Certifications:

  • USPTO registration preferred.
