NOT RECOMMENDED Read More About the BCG Attorney Search Law Firm Ranking System

This is a firm we do not trust and warn others to avoid based on our experience.
Not Recommended law firms may have a history of complaints and negative reviews, possibly making them risky workplaces for associates and other employees. These firms may exhibit toxic work environments marked by a lack of coordination between departments and management, possible political strife, and different problematic dynamics. The management at Not Recommended firms may be unresponsive to concerns about human resources or political issues, leading to high employee dissatisfaction and, in some cases, negative experience. As a result, these firms may be considered undesirable choices for those seeking stable and fulfilling employment in the legal industry. Some law firms ranked Not Recommended or below are done so based on private information possessed by BCG Attorney Search. This information makes us nervous about recommending this firm to others until these issues are corrected.
We have been in this business for 25+ years, have spoken with countless attorneys from this firm, and believe that certain firms (most firms) err on the side of being more positive than negative places to work. There are also firms where the reports from attorneys are more negative than positive and have been for years. This does not mean every attorney has a negative experience at Not Recommended firms, every department is problematical, or every office is. Over time, cultural, management, and other issues result in an overall negative rating. We are careful about making these ratings only when confidential; ongoing adverse reports are confirmed by our experience with the firm and speaking with many attorneys there that seem consistently more negative than positive.

BCG Attorney Search speaks with attorneys about law firms every day. Here is what attorneys are saying:

Hancock, Daniel & Johnson, P.C. is an established law firm based in Virginia. The firm has a singular focus on healthcare and medical malpractice defense litigation. Reviews from attorneys and other staff members note that the firm is progressive in the healthcare arena, has talented lawyers, and has an interesting clientele and subject matter. The bonus system is also seen as a nice incentive. The culture at Hancock, Daniel & Johnson, P.C. is seen as great overall, with good energy and a focus on treating employees and clients well. The compensation and benefits are also seen as competitive and generous. However, some reviewers have noted that the firm does not recognize the value of offering balanced services that bill out at lower rates, and there is a lack of career growth opportunities. Additionally, management is described as poor, with favoritism, gossip, and no gratitude for staff. The HR department is also seen as needing a lot of help. Despite these issues, the firm is still seen as rewarding those who excel and work hard.

Pros: Significant independence, interesting and complex projects, very collegial and respectful atmosphere.

Cons: Compensation seems low compared to similarly situated firms (I am trying to get a better grasp on what my market rate might be given my somewhat unique career trajectory of spending time in-house before joining a law firm).

Partners to Avoid and Why: For the most part no- individual projects can sometimes be stressful, but the partners in this firm are notably kind, respectful, and easy to work with.
