Job Overview:

The ideal candidate will possess a combination of technical acumen and IP experience, particularly in patent prosecution, and preferably in broader patent strategy work such as portfolio management or due diligence. This position offers the opportunity to support innovative clients in medical device technology while contributing to high-level patent matters in a collaborative legal environment.

Duties:

  • Draft detailed patent applications, incorporating complex scientific concepts clearly and accurately

  • Respond to official actions from the U.S. and foreign patent offices, addressing technical issues effectively

  • Evaluate scientific and technical aspects of inventions and provide strategic recommendations

  • Conduct technology landscape analyses, freedom-to-operate studies, and patentability evaluations

  • Serve as liaison between inventors and the USPTO throughout the application lifecycle

  • Facilitate clear and professional communication with clients, inventors, and examiners

  • Research and remain informed on industry trends and advancements in biomedical technologies

  • Maintain accurate data and reporting related to IP workflows and project progress

  • Participate in professional development and ongoing education in patent law and relevant technologies

  • Manage and prioritize a high volume of tasks efficiently, particularly under tight deadlines

Requirements:

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in patent prosecution, preferably involving medical devices or mechanical/biomedical innovations

  • Familiarity with patent portfolio management and due diligence processes is advantageous

  • Experience with PTAB proceedings is a plus, though not required

  • Ability to translate complex scientific data into accessible legal documentation

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple matters simultaneously

  • Willingness to work additional hours during deadline-intensive periods

  • Capability to operate in a hybrid work environment (minimum three days in-office per week)

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, material science, or a closely related discipline required

  • Master’s or PhD in a relevant technical field strongly preferred

Certifications:

  • USPTO registration required or eligibility to sit for the Patent Bar

Skills:

  • Proficiency in drafting and prosecuting patent applications

  • Strong written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain complex technology to varied audiences

  • Skilled in Microsoft Office tools (Outlook, Word, Excel); experience with docketing software preferred

  • Deep understanding of confidentiality obligations and professional ethics

  • Effective interpersonal abilities with both technical and legal professionals
